The Minster at Beverley UK was started around 1230 and is to all intents and purposes cathedral sized, owing to it’s role as a pilgrimage centre for Bishop John of York who was canonized as Saint John of Beverley.

The images in this set form part of a remarkable collection of Gothic hoodmould stops to the blind arcading in the north and south aisles of the Nave (early C15th).

Pevsner notes that they provide “some of the best contemporary representations of medieval musical instruments…”

Over last Christmas I spent a couple of sublime hours photographing these details. I did photograph all of the stops, but some didn’t come out too well owing to the camera being hand held. There are over a hundred of them (from memory). Here’s 42 of the best. I’d love to have the chance to go back and photograph them all with a tripod.
