50 Historic Window Designs

Submitted by Andy Marshall on January 8, 2009 – 9:51 am2 Comments

Here’s 50 images of over 1000 years of fantastic fenestration details taken over half a decade.

My humble experience tells me that window design is (much like the chair) is part of the dna of architecture.

Windows have been used as a signature on buildings for centuries, from Norman Shaw’s Queen Anne style to Le Corbusier’s ribbon windows.

The term window is a rounding off of “wind hole” which was essentially the vacant space in the wall left to allow ventilation for an open hall (apparently).

Thanks Joakim – one advantage of being relatively long in the tooth is that you have quite a large resource of images. Must do more with other details such as doors etc
