Image of the Week: Studley Royal
Saint Mary Studley Royal is now part of the Fountains Abbey estate which is a World Heritage Site.
Methinks that the WHS status is because of the monastic ruins and landscape thereabouts.
But (and I think you can see this coming) I think that this gorgeous little gem of a building deserves a significance statement all of its own.
I am honoured that one of my images of this church comes first in the google image search
And in the words of English Heritage:
“This magnificent High Victorian Anglican church was designed in the 1870s by the flamboyant architect William Burges, and has been called his ‘ecclesiastical masterpiece’. The extravagantly decorated interior displays coloured marble, stained glass, a splendid organ, and painted and gilded figures in all their original glory.”
